California Proposition 215, commonly known as Prop 215, went into effect in 1996. Specifically, Prop 215 exempts medicinal marijuana users and their caregivers from criminal prosecution in the state of California.

The counties of San Diego and San Bernadino filed suit in 2008 to reverse the proposition on the grounds that it conflicted with federal law.

Afterward, the California Supreme Court held up Prop 215, and it is still in effect today.
